Wake (Dream Catcher #1) by Lisa McMann

Publication Date: 3/4/2008
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 224
Format: Hardcover
Source: Purchased

Goodreads Summary:
For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant.

Janie is an amazing 17-year-old girl.  She has a mother who is an alcoholic, and she doesn't really know her father.  When she was 8-years old she had her first "in-dream" experience.  See...Janie is somehow being sucked into the dreams of others and hasn't been able to figure out how to stop it.  It isn't just pleasant dreams, but nightmares as well.  The best she has been able to do is close herself in a different room than someone who is sleeping, but that hasn't always worked either.

Janie finds herself in a horrible, terrible nightmare from someone she doesn't know.  Unfortunately, she finds out that she is a participant in this nightmare as well.  Janie does her best to avoid the road on which the person lives who had the dream, but eventually she finds out that this person is someone she has known for quite some time.

Janie struggles throughout this novel to discover how to control getting sucked into others' dreams using different techniques.  When she discovers someone else can do the same thing it makes her try even harder.  The boy she likes is involved in some shady activity as well, but Janie finds out much more than she bargained for.

This was a great novel that I couldn't put down once I started it.  Janie is an interesting character, and the boy she likes is pretty cool as well.  It was kind of weird to have a little love story thrown in when it wasn't expected, but it all worked out great.  Janie discovered a lot about herself and those around her.  She is growing into a strong and smart young woman.  I can't wait to read #2 in this series.  I'm hoping it is just as good, if not better!
