Gone (Gone #1) by Michael Grant

Goodreads Summary:

In the blink of an eye. Everyone disappears. GONE.
Except for the young. Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not one single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what's happened.
Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents—unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers—that grow stronger by the day.
It's a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: On your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else...

Imagine a world where there is not a single person aged 15 or older.  Imagine a world in which 14 year old children are driving, taking care of babies/toddlers, providing food/water, running a fire department, in charge of the city?  That's what you will find in Gone.  Among other things which include mutating animals that are ruled by The Darkness.  This novel keeps you on your toes.  You never know what's going to happen next.  I was fearful for the children as well as sad at one point for a child and her dog.  I couldn't imagine any 14 year old I know taking care of a ton of other children on a long-term basis.  The worst part?  When you turn 15 you disappear too.  Where do you go?  No one knows, but they are determined to find out what is behind this turn of events.  Gone was so much more than I expected.  I didn't think I would be too interested, but I read this novel in a day because I couldn't put it down!  Very cool!
